Gary Neville believes Manchester United need to strengthen their goalkeeping position. Yesterday, Manchester United lost to Arsenal (0:1) in the home match from buy 1x2 football tips of the 1st round of the Premier League. The goal was scored by Riccardo Calafiori after an error by goalkeeper Altai Bayindyr, who failed to collect the ball in a jump after a corner kick. The Manchester United goalkeeper complained to the referee that William Saliba pushed him.
There is an obvious problem that Manchester United cannot ignore - they need to find a goalkeeper. They must do this.
I`m sure of this because in my 20 years at Manchester United I spent two big periods of seven or eight years with Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar. Between them we`ve had seven or eight goalkeepers in six, seven, eight years and it`s really worrying when you don`t have a goalkeeper who dominates the air, controls the crease and makes a lot of saves to help the team earn points when the defenders make mistakes.
I don`t know what the Premier League`s financial rules are like, but they might have to come up with a little more money over the next couple of weeks or bring in someone.
Amy Martinez and [Canluigi] Donnarumma have been mentioned in the last two weeks. I think they would be a good fit for Manchester United because they are not only the best goalkeepers in Europe, but also bright personalities.
We saw Donnarumma save a penalty in the European Championship final. He looked like a giant. He played under pressure for PSG in tough matches. Martinez played in the World Cup final and won it with Argentina. They played under a lot of pressure and pulled through thanks to the dominance and audacity of their goalkeepers - Manchester United need that.
Manchester United needs a lot this season and Amorim is getting to the point where he thinks he has a team that can do something. But they need to solve the goalkeeping problem because they are conceding goals and losing points and it is constantly undermining the work they have done.
When the goalkeeper hits the ball, 72, 000 fans sigh heavily and it sends shivers down the defenders` spines. It also causes the goalkeeper to tremble and creates an uneasy atmosphere in the stadium. `In this position you need to be strong, have consistency and character and that`s something Manchester United will have to face in the next couple of weeks, ` the former Manchester United player said.
